SEO basics for estate agents (and others..)

Everybody needs to "do" SEO, and you have probably already thought about that. But since it is such complex stuff you have no idea where to start. The first question you should ask yourself: can you do it yourself?

Depending on the website and property management system you can or cannot improve your SEO. Important to know is if you can access your own website section to change or add texts or blogs to your site. If not, who can do that and what is necessary to arrange for it? What costs are involved if your webmaster needs to make all changes to your site because you can't do it yourself?

Since Google is still the most used search engine on mainland Europe, is it quite interesting to know what they have to say about optimizing your site for their search engines.  Googles philosophy behind searching is that they want to offer results that answer the question of their visitors as good as possible. Google only wants to show good quality sites in their search result.

A good quality site in the opinion of Google is a site which:

  • Has a clear and logical navigation structure
This means that it is easy for visitors to your website to find what they are looking for. The site should be structured simple and easy to use. All menu items should refer to an article and it is nice if there are links to other pages within your own site.

  • Has interesting content
This means that the content on the site should answer questions of the visitors or give qualitative good information about the product or service you sell.

  • Has regularly updated and newly added content
This means that once your site is finished the doesn't end. In fact it has just started. For Google it is absolutely necessary to know that a site is active: alive and kicking. The only way you can let Google know that you are working on it is to regularly (at least once a month!) add new content to it or change some content.

  • Has links to other sites and is linked to from other sites
You are part of the world wide WEB. It is like a giant spider web, you need to be attached to other parts of the web to be a part of it. If you don't have any links to other websites on your site, or if no other sites are linking to yours, than for Google you don't exist. Because Google crawls the web through these links to and from websites. Interesting huh?

Of course there are many other things you can do to optimize your website. But if the above is done you stand a good chance of being found.

Do it yourself?

Please be reminded that the above are actions you can do yourself. There is a lot of little things your webmaster / designer / team needs to do to get your site higher up in Google. And of course there is the whole marketing, social media and other means of communication to drive visitors to your website.

But you need to start somewhere, don't you?
